On April 16, Cornell Law 2L and 3L students had the invaluable opportunity to attend “Crucial Advice for Success as a Summer Intern or Junior Attorney,” a powerful and practical professional development program led by renowned legal trainer and coach, Werten F.W. Bellamy Jr., president and founder of Stakeholders. Known for his ability to decode the complexities of the legal workplace, Bellamy guided students through two compelling sessions designed to elevate their “workplace IQ” and set them on the path to long-term career success.

Held in the Landis Auditorium at Myron Taylor Hall, the event was the conclusion of the Law School’s new Student Professional Development Program. The first session— “How the Legal Workplace Works”—used a vivid retail analogy to help students understand the dynamics of the junior attorney experience. Bellamy compared junior attorneys to retailers in a mall— emphasizing that success often hinges on creating a standout product and service experience. Just as retailers convert one-time shoppers into loyal customers, junior attorneys must strive to inspire trust and consistency in those who assign work, particularly partners and senior attorneys. It’s not just about doing the job— it’s about becoming someone others advocate for and rely on.

After a brief intermission and refreshments in the Gallery, students returned for a second session focused on relationship building—“Building Strong Internal Relationships.” Bellamy unpacked the behavioral habits and interpersonal strategies used by top-performing associates to develop meaningful, trust-based connections in the workplace. He emphasized that lasting success in law firms and other legal settings often depends on a strong internal network of mentors, peers, and advocates.

Following the sessions, attendees gathered for a reception and mixer—an ideal setting to apply what they’d learned.
With hors d’oeuvres, wine, mocktails, and lively conversations, students connected with alumni, faculty, and each other, continuing the evening’s focus on relationship-building and professional growth.
This impactful event would not have been possible without the generous support of several dedicated alumni sponsors:
Debra Azarian Taylor ’90 chief tax strategist and managing partner, carson wealth.
Andrianne Payson ’00 executive vice president & general counsel, veolia north america.
Desi Fernandez ’08 managing director, trustpoint.one.
Maria Ramirez ’98 partner, hogan lovells.
Geoff Young ’06 partner, riley safer holmes & cancila.

Students left the event equipped with real-world tools, insider insight, and the confidence to take charge of their careers. This event marked more than just a training—it was a catalyst for confidence, connection, and career momentum.
Bellamy is widely regarded as a premier voice in professional development for junior legal professionals.
